A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT

Protecting Cultural Objects in the Global Information Society has reached its first goal: the establishment of international, multi-sector agreement on the essential information required to identify an object.

A complicated process has produced a simple result, i.e., a distillation of information that coincides with most existing systems. The next stage is to implement that result, Object ID, through many avenues of activity. In sectors where no documentation for objects exists, Object ID is being adopted as the basis for creating an initial record. In more highly developed sectors, Object ID can be the basis for achieving compatibility, enabling development of exchange formats among many databases.

This publication, then, represents an inauguration rather than a completion. We now ask the many communities involved in the recovery of stolen objects to join with us in propagating and implementing this standard.
