Museums, by definition, exist to serve society & its development.
Museums can stay open 24 hours a day, offer free entry, and create new areas for social gatherings and events with community organisations and associations in light of this year’s theme for an all night debate on social change & development . For example, see what France is doing this year:
IBERO-AMERICAN YEAR OF THE MUSEUMS 2008
Post-colonial discourse reaches new levels of interaction in museums in the Spanish & Portuguese-speaking world.
ICOM chose to echo the Ibero-American Year of the Museums theme for 2008, supported by Brazil, Spain, Portugal, and a host of Latin-American countries.
Many of countries have INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM DAY coincide with festivities during the month of May and extend celebrations for a whole week in May including traditional festivals with new creative artists featured. Developing culture means supporting the arts, contemporary performance artists, musicians, dancers in and around the museum facilities. NEW MUSEUM OPENINGS
Museums are part of the urban and economic development of cities, regions and countries.
Many new museums are choosing INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM DAY for their inaugurations, re-openings, etc… Last year, the National Museum of Slavery in Luanda re-opened on 18 May 2007

ICOM@THE TECH@SECOND LIFE
The main event is the largest international gathering of museum professionals ever held - online in the virtual TECH MUSEUM in SECOND LIFE, the online 3-D platform. ICOM is organising its whole network to participate and meet up on 18 MAY 2008 to celebrate INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM DAY together, connecting the real world of museums to the virtual world for a day.
