This issue of the journal Museum Management and Curatorship is devoted to the deaccessioning of collections, and contains articles - still regarded as authoritative - on the ethical aspects of the transfer and sale of museum objects and on U.K. and U.S. legislation in this area.

Two of the papers in this collection are of especial interest, "Inaliénabilité des œuvres : la législation européenne" (The Inalienability of Works of Art: European legislation), by Xavier Buffet Delmas d'Autane (p. 243-261), in which the author explains the principle of inalienability of works of art in French law and provides an overview of current legislation in this area in Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom; and "Le principe d'inaliénabilité : une remise en question" (Questioning the Principle of Alienability) by Chris Dercon (p. 263-285), which takes a fresh look at the issue of deaccessioning as it relates to contemporary art, via the collections management policy of the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam.

Requested to come up with a standard procedure for the selection and deaccessioning of museum objects, the Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage published its Guide to the Deaccessioning of Museum Objects in 1999. The Guide includes a questionnaire and standard form, and has become the cornerstone of Dutch self-regulation in this area.

SIMPSON, Shane - Deaccessioning and Disposal
Website:http://www.simpsons.com.au/library/museums.htm
13 p.

Summary of a paper given by Shane Simpson at the Museums Association of Victoria seminar on 'Museums and Legal Issues' in 1991. The article guides the reader through the legal and ethical aspects of deaccessioning (removal of an object from a permanent collection, in which the object remains the property of the museum) and disposal (by sale, gift or destruction), and gives practical advice on the various legal procedures involved.
